If you are like me – you absolutely love chicken wings.
In fact, they may be one of my favorite dishes.
There is one problem though.
Wings have a ton of calories!
And that is not good for dieting.
However, you may have heard about the recent buzz regarding air fryers.
That’s because you can make chicken wings healthy by air frying them!
Here’s the catch though – an air fryer can be expensive and will take up extra space in your kitchen.
And in reality, how often are you really going to use it?
That’s why I use the air fryer that comes with my oven and likely your oven too – it’s called the convection setting.
You see, an air fryer simply uses circulated hot air to cook whatever you put into it.
And guess what the convection setting on your oven does?
The same exact thing.
Simply put as Christine Gallary from the blog Kitchnn says – “it’s an oven that has a fan and exhaust system.”
It’s just doesn’t have a trendy name like ‘air fryer.’
So, save yourself some coin on an air fryer and use this recipe to make healthy chicken wings that come out perfect every time.
I’m going to use the term ‘air fried’ in this article interchangeably with ‘convection baked’.
Remember, they are the same thing!
Are Air Fryer Wings Healthy?
I write a ton about healthy food.
It’s a passion of mine.
And so first, we need to discuss why ‘air fryer’ or convection baked wings are healthy.
Most chicken wings are deep-fried in oil.
Guess what that results in?
A ton of excess calories!
You can easily minimize this by getting rid of the oil altogether.
The convection oven setting uses circulated hot air to essentially ‘fry’ the wings in their own fat.
In other words, you don’t need to drop them into extra oil to deep fry them because the wings will cook in their own oils once the hot air hits them!
How Many Calories Are in Air Fried Chicken Wings?
A regular fried chicken wing is going to run you on average 130kcal per wing.
Your air-fried wing is going to run you only 80kcal.
You will save 50kcal per wing which may not seem like a lot – but multiply that by 10 wings and you saved 500kcal!
How Long to Cook Chicken Wings
To make your wings crispy and taste like a regular fried chicken wing, you need hot temps for a prolonged period of time.
My method makes them perfect every time. It’s simple, just remember 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 minutes.
